The lovely tea cozy at left was a special gift for my own mother, Patricia Marley Madison, on Mother's Day. Mother was, and continues to be even at 86, a dedicated and passionate gardener, so this cozy features some of her favorite flowers; peonies and roses. The curved shape of the cozy lent itself perfectly to a fan motif design for the crazy quilt fabrics. The needlework harmonizes with the rich fabrics in jewel tones of purple, lavender, gold, teal and plum.
I employed many of the antique stitches featured in Carol Samples' book, "Crazy Quilt Stitches". The cozy is trimmed with antique lace and a gusset of purple velvet and plumped with plenty of cotton filling to keep the tea steaming hot.
As you have seen, crazy quilting and silk ribbon embroidery can be adapted to a variety of design formats to embellish clothing, home furnishings, holiday ornaments, ecclesiastical paraments, formal framed art and much more. The formats are limited only by the imagination and I already have enough ideas to keep me busy for the next 50 years! These hand-worked designs and creations are quite labor intensive, as you may have surmised, some projects taking many months to complete.
